The UK Online Safety Act

As a UK-based company, we are fully behind the UK Online Safety Act (OSA) and proud to play our part in building safer digital communities. As parents ourselves, we wholeheartedly support this landmark legislation and believe it is a vital step toward creating safer, more responsible online spaces. We are committed to leading the way in embedding its principles throughout our platform.

  • Highly Effective Age Assurance: Protecting young people online is one of the Act’s core aims, and it’s one of ours too. That’s why our platforms are designed for users aged 16 and above, with private messaging and group chat features reserved for those aged 18+. We go further by implementing highly effective age assurance measures, partnering with reputable third-party providers to deliver the highest standards of safety and compliance. These safeguards not only meet the OSA’s requirements but also give parents, carers, and communities confidence that TalkLife is a platform where young people can connect and share safely.

  • Tackling Illegal Harms: We take a zero-tolerance approach to illegal content, with powerful systems in place to detect, remove, and escalate material in line with the OSA. This includes:

    • Child sexual exploitation and abuse material (CSEA)

    • Terrorism and violent extremism

    • Hate crime and incitement to violence

    • Fraud and financial crime

    • Illegal drugs and weapons sales

    • Revenge pornography and non-consensual sexual imagery

Where necessary, we work hand-in-hand with the relevant authorities to ensure unlawful activity is addressed swiftly and responsibly.

  • Our Commitment to Safer Communities: We believe the OSA sets a new benchmark for online safety and TalkLife is proud not only to meet that standard, but to champion it. With advanced moderation systems, robust reporting tools, and clear community guidelines, we go beyond compliance to create a supportive, protective environment for everyone who uses our platform.

The EU Digital Services Act (DSA)

We are fully committed to complying with the EU Digital Services Act (DSA), which sets clear standards for transparency, accountability, and user protection across the European Union. Much like our work under the UK Online Safety Act, we see the DSA as a vital framework for building safer, more responsible digital spaces.

Our approach under the DSA mirrors the safeguards we have embedded across TalkLife, ensuring a consistent and robust standard of compliance no matter where our communities are based. By aligning closely with both the DSA and the OSA, we demonstrate not only legal compliance but our broader commitment to setting the benchmark for safety and trust online.

  • Transparency of Rules: We provide clear and accessible terms of service and community standards, ensuring users understand what content is permitted and how moderation decisions are made.

  • User Empowerment: We offer straightforward reporting tools so users can flag harmful or illegal content, supported by accessible appeals processes if users disagree with moderation outcomes.

  • Fair Processes: We respect users’ rights to contest and appeal content decisions, and apply moderation policies consistently and fairly across our platform.

  • Risk Reduction: Our safety measures are designed to reduce exposure to illegal or harmful content, particularly for minors and other vulnerable groups. These protections mirror the safeguards we have in place for UK users under the Online Safety Act.

US State-level age verification laws

In the United States, we are committed to meeting the requirements of emerging state-level age verification laws, particularly where they affect social platforms. These laws are designed to strengthen parental oversight and reduce risks for minors online - goals we fully support.

At TalkLife, we go further by proactively aligning our safeguards with these regulations, ensuring that our platform not only meets legal standards but also provides young people with a safer environment to connect and share online.

  • Tennessee & Mississippi: Both states have enacted new legislation - the Protecting Children from Social Media Act (Tennessee, 2025) and the Social Media Safety Act (Mississippi, 2025) - which require enhanced parental consent processes and strict age verification measures. To comply, TalkLife access in these jurisdictions is restricted to users aged 18 and above, with mandatory age verification applied to all users.

  • Other States: Similar legislation is under consideration in states including Louisiana, Utah, and Arkansas, as well as a growing number of other jurisdictions. These bills typically include requirements around parental consent, age checks, and in some cases restrictions on features such as messaging or algorithmic recommendations for minors. We actively track these developments and prepare to update our policies and safeguards as each new law takes effect.

  • Consistency Across Jurisdictions: To avoid a patchwork approach, we apply consistent safety measures that meet or exceed the strictest state requirements. This helps ensure compliance across all US jurisdictions while delivering strong protections for minors.

  • Ongoing Monitoring: Because US state laws evolve rapidly, our compliance team maintains a continuous legislative review process. This allows us to adapt quickly, safeguard minors, and remain aligned with the latest regulatory obligations nationwide.

Australia Online Safety Codes

In Australia, we follow the Online Safety Codes, which set important standards for protecting users and reducing online harms. We are proud to meet these requirements and ensure our platforms reflect the high expectations set for digital services. These codes focus on:

  • Minimising harmful online content and ensuring timely removal.

  • Providing clear and accessible complaint mechanisms.

  • Ensuring age-appropriate design features and protections.

We are also closely monitoring forthcoming restrictions on social media use, due to take effect later this year, and will adapt our platform policies to remain compliant as the legal framework evolves.

Other jurisdictions

Alongside the UK, EU, US, and Australia, we closely monitor and comply with online safety and age verification requirements in other jurisdictions. As new legislation emerges around the world, we proactively adapt our safeguards to remain aligned with local standards.

This ensures that no matter where our communities are based, TalkLife applies a consistent, high level of protection for our users.

  • Canada: We are closely monitoring developments around the proposed Online Harms Act and other child-safety legislation, and will adapt our safeguards in line with final requirements.

  • Global Approach: We also review emerging frameworks in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and other jurisdictions to ensure our safety measures meet or exceed international best practices.

Data protection & privacy

Safeguarding our communities also means safeguarding their data. At TalkLife, we treat privacy and data protection as core responsibilities, ensuring that personal information is handled securely, transparently, and in full compliance with global regulations such as the GDPR.

We comply with a range of regional and international standards, including:

  • UK GDPR & Data Protection Act 2018 – see our dedicated GDPR Compliance page.

  • EU GDPR for our European users.

  • CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act) for users in California.

  • Other regional privacy regulations, applied where relevant.

In addition to meeting these legal requirements, we limit the data we collect, process user data responsibly, and provide clear privacy choices for our users.

Law enforcement & escalation

We take our responsibility to protect users seriously and work closely with law enforcement agencies where required. Our approach is built on swift escalation of serious threats, strict safeguards around data requests, and a commitment to preventing harm wherever possible.

  • We proactively escalate certain categories of serious illegal content, such as child sexual exploitation and terrorism-related material, to the relevant authorities.

  • We respond to lawful requests for user data only when legally required.

  • All requests are carefully reviewed to ensure they are valid, proportionate, and legally binding.

  • Emergency requests are prioritised to prevent imminent harm.

Our ongoing commitment

Online safety is never static. We continually review and strengthen our compliance frameworks, safety measures, and reporting processes as laws evolve worldwide. Our goal is to uphold the highest standards of trust, transparency, and protection for every member of our community.
