When sex is out of control

Sex Addiction
Sexual addiction is a problematic preoccupation with sex, often involving the obsessive pursuit of non-intimate sexual encounters such as affairs, casual sex, anonymous sex, prostitutes, pornography, compulsive masturbation, strip joints, sexual massages, etc. This pattern continues for a period of at least six months, despite the following:
  1. Attempts made to stop the behavior
  2. Promises made to change the sexual behavior
  3. Significant negative life consequences such as relationship instability, emotional turmoil, physical health problems, career trouble, and legal issues
Is Sex Addiction a Disease?
There has been a longstanding debate among sex therapists and sex addiction therapists as to whether sex addiction is a recognized mental disorder.  The American Psychiatric Association maintains the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM). The DSM is the primary reference manual for psychiatric professionals in the United States used to classify mental disorders. In the past, the DSM has included some form of out of control sexual behavior, however it was not included in the 2013 version (DSM-V) due to lack of research to support it. Regardless of whether or not sex addiction is formally a disease, if you are struggling with problematic sexual behaviors and have not been able to stop, there is hope.
